Stephan Grögler recently stages the Triology of Beaumarchais: Barbiere di Seviglia, Nozze di Figaro, and the world premiere of L’Amour coupableby Thierry Pécou at the Rouen Opera and the Versailles Opera.

Born in 1966, Stephan Grögler first studies the violin before joining the Viennese ‘Hochschule’ to take up studies in stage directing. He soon begins to work as assistant director in major theatres and opera houses in France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, the USA and Japan, as well as for the Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence festivals.  In 1995 he is appointed resident stage director at the Lyon National Opera.

He produces numerous operas including La Somnambula (Bellini) with Nathalie Dessay for the Santa Fe festival, the same production is invited to the Teatro Comunale di Bologna / Samson et Dalilaat  Lecce, Cendrillon (Massenet) at the Monnaie de Bruxelles and at the Grand Théâtre du Luxembourg /La Bohèmein Bienne (Switzerland) / Bluebeard (Bartok) and Der Zwerg / The Dwarf (Zemlinsky) at the Opera of Berne /La Traviata at the Dublin Opera / Tancredi (Rossini) at the Opera of Marseille / La Cenerentola in Lausanne and Nantes, Viva la Mamma(Donizetti) at the Montpellier Opera and in Caen /Don Pasquale in St. Gallen (Switzerland) / L’Anima del Filosofo (Haydn) at the Opera of Lausanne / Le Nozze di Figaroin Nantes and Angers / The Beggar’s Opera (Britten) in Caen and Rouen / Der Kaiser von Atlantis / The Emperor of Atlantis (Ullmann) at the Opéra Comique de Paris / The Turn of The Screw(B. Britten) in Caen, Rennes, Rouen, l’Opéra Comique de Paris and the Lyon National Opera / and again in Lausanne the much acclaimed production of Lulli’s Roland  in cooperation with Christophe Rousset.

His interest in contemporary music leads him also to create the world première of Works by composers including Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Gracianne Finzi, Peter Maxwell Davies, José Evangelista, Pascal Dusapin, Thierry Pécou… Among his upcoming projects: La Veuve Joyeuse(Lehar), Opera National in Nancy / Die Weisse Rose (Zimmermann), La Chaux de Fonds / Orphée aux Enfersfor the Grand Théâtre in Geneva / La petite renarde rusée (Janacek) /Pierrot Lunaire with Julia Migenes /Cambiale di Matrimonio (Rossini) for the Festival Aix-en-Provence and Ambronay.
